I was on a visit to one of my friends’ house. While we were busy talking, one of her daughters, who was about three years old, came in and pulled on her dress saying: “Mom, we did not build a house in Jannah today.”

I thought I misheard her. Then her siblings joined her and they all repeated the same thing. My friend saw the curiosity on my face and smiled and said to me: “Do you want to see how we build a mansion in Jannah?”

I stood and watched as she made her children sit around her and together they started reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas ten times:

قل هو الله احد الله الصمد لم يلد ولم يولد ولم يكن له كفوا احد
When they finished they all said excitedly with one voice: “Alhamdhulillah we built a house in Paradise.” 

Then the mother asked: “What do you want to add to this palace?” The children replied that they wanted to add treasures. Then they began chanting:

لا حول ولا قوة الا بالله
There is no mighty nor power except in Allah

Then she asked them: “Which of you wants to drink from the hands of the Prophet of Allah peace be upon him and never feel thirsty again?” They all began to say:

اللهم صل على محمد وعلى آل محمد .. كما صليت على إبراهيم وعلى آل إبراهيم إنك حميد مجيد

 وبارك على محمد وعلى آل محمد  كما باركت على إبراهيم وعـلى آل إبراهــيم إنك حميد مجيد

(O Allaah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent prayers upon Ibraaheem and upon the family of Ibraaheem; You are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory. O Allaah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibraaheem and upon the family of Ibraaheem; You are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory).”

They followed it with praising Allah. Then each of them went back to what they were doing from studying and playing.

Amazed I asked her about the whole scenario. She replied: “My children love sitting with me and rejoice when I gather them and sit among them, and I wanted to exploit it and teach them how to praise and thank Allah in a way that their tiny minds can understand. They see palaces in children’s programs and wish to live in them, and watch cartoon heroes who are struggling to get treasures.”

SubhanAllah! Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmee rightly said:

”The mother is the first school. If she is righteous, the progeny becomes righteous”

My friend is accumulating rewards upon rewards masha Allah, because whenever one of her children will read or recite the adhkar above, it will be an ongoing charity for her. Without doubt, it is the best investment in this world and the Hereafter.

The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ said, 
“When the human being dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.
(Saheeh Muslim 1631)

Arafah – A day of acceptance of du’as

‘Arafah is a day of acceptance of du’as and du’a is the cord that connects the human to the Almighty and according to a Hadith: “The best of du’a is du’a on the day of ‘Arafah.” (Hasan Al-Albaani in Saheeh Al-Jaami’1102)

So make a list of the du’as closest to your heart and then pray to Allah on the best day of the year with sincerity and humility. Talk to Him like you would talk to a friend and confess your fears and expectations. He is Al-Sami (The Hearer) and Al-Mujeeb (The One who responds) so He will surely listen and respond to what He Knows is best for you. Imam Shawkani (rahimahuAllah) rightly said: “To know your du’a is accepted is to have your heart ready, cry and shed tears to Allah, being persistent, and after that feeling, a burden taken off your shoulders.”

The best du’aas are from the Qur’an and Sunnah but here’s a list of some duas (I received on whatsapp) that you can include in your lists as well Insha Allah:

1. Ya Allah grant me Ultimate Success -safety from the Fire and entry into Jannathul Firdous

2. Ya Allah make me and my family of those companions of the Right. Who receive the book of deeds in our right hands.

3. Ya Allah, Grant me a blessed death. Let me utter the shahada before I die. Grant me the intercession of Prophet (Sal).

4. Ya Allah grant me the companionship of Prophet (Sal), his family and the Sahaba’s in Jannathul Firdous.

5. Ya Allah save my non Muslim friends from the Fire. Guide them to Islam.

6. Ya Allah, reunite me in Jannathul Firdous with those whom I love for Your sake alone.

7. Ya Rabb, perfect my Deen and my Worship. Save me from Faahisha and let me complete half of my Deen.

8. Ya Allah accept my good deeds and increase me in reward and Your Mercy. Wipe away my sins and pardon me completely. Shower your Mercy upon me and save me from disgrace on the Day of Reckoning.

9. Ya Allah, when I die, let my soul and my record of Deeds be with the Illiyeen.

10. Ya Allah grant me, my parents, family and children guidance, steadfastness and increased Imaan.

11. Ya Allah, make me of the few You love, You Pardon and You shade on a Day when there is no shade but from Your Majestic Arsh (Throne).

12. Oh my Lord, increase me in Yakeen and Tawakkul in you. Let there be no doubt in my belief in Your Oneness, Your Majesty and Power.

13. Ya Allah increase me in my love for You and Your Prophet (Sal).

14. Ya Allah forgive me and increase me in Your Blessings and Provisions.

15. Ya Allah lead me to more opportunities to do good and seeking Your Pleasure.

16. Ya Rabb, Purify my intentions for Your Sake alone and let me not show off or take false pride. Save me from arrogance, pride, showing off and reminding of favors.

17. Oh my Creator and Sustainer, do not leave me alone. Bless me with a righteous spouse and children who will be the coolness of my eyes.

18. Oh my Lord, make me of those who are patient and obedient to You and to my parents.

19. Save me from the Fitnah of Dajjal.

20. Save me from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Hell Fire.

21. Ya Allah, increase me in Sadakathul Jariya work.

22. Ya Allah, bless me with good health, so I can make sajdah with ease till my dying day.

23. Ya Allah, protect me and the Muslim Ummah against wicked oppressors. Save us from Fitnah and give us ease in our times of trial.

24. My Lord, bless me with the best in this world, the best in the Hereafter and save me from the fire. I am indeed in need of the good You have in store for me.

25. Ya Allah increase me in gratitude towards You alone.

26. Oh my Rabb, save me from hypocrisy.

27. Ya Allah, let me and my spouse be among the pilgrims to perform Hajj

28. Ya Allah protect me against Evil Jinns and Spirits. Safeguard me from their evil incitements and plots.

29. Ya Allah forgive and have Mercy upon my parents, as they looked after me when I was young.

30. Ya Allah, I pray and beg of you for the guidance of the Muslim Youth and Ummah. Save us all from Kufr, Despair, Misdeeds and Shirk.

31. Ya Allah grant me the strength to battle laziness and sleep, so I may wake up for Tahajjud and Fajr daily.

32. Ya Allah forgive n protect the Muslim Uammah through out the world .

33. Ya Allah make us among the one who is on the right path .

May Allah accept and respond to our heartfelt du’aas and give us more than what we expect of Him! Aameen! 

Relief is near


Allah laughs
SubhanAllah, Allah is always watching us, hearing us and knows what we are going through. He hears our dua’s, watches how we cling on to Him in hope and how we increase in intense and desperate du’aa to Him.
That is why Allah marvels about the despair of his servants, while the changing of their situation from bad to good is very near, He looks at them and they are very desperate, so He keeps laughing in mercy, because He knows His relief to them is very close.
May Allah protect us from falling into despair, may He hasten His response to our du’as and grant relief to desperate hearts! Ameen.

Feel confident about your murmured du’aas

A new Muslim in the time of the Prophet ﷺ once heard the Prophet supplicating in low tones after one of the prescribed prayers. When he found himself unable to retain all that the Prophet ﷺ had prayed, he went to the companion Mu’adh ibn Jabal hoping to hear an easier du’aa. To his dismay, he heard Mu’adh repeating a du’aa similar to that of the Prophet ﷺ. Somewhat frustrated, he went back to the Prophet ﷺ who asked him:  “What do you say when you pray?” He said: “I recite the tashahhud, then I say: 

“اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ”

(Allaahumma inni as’aluka al-jannah wa a’oodhu bika min an-naar) O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge in You from the Fire. I cannot murmur like you and like Mu’aadh.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “It is about this, that we were murmuring.”

(Narrated by Abu Dawood, 792; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, taken from the book, “Lasting Prayers” by Ahmad Zaki Hammad)

Whether you know Arabic, or you don’t. Whether you have memorized some duas or none at all – when you ask of Allah that which is good, feel confident about your murmuring. You are asking The All Hearing, The All Seeing, and He hears you in whatever language you use and He sees the meanings emanating from within your heart. :)

 

How to raise the forefinger during Tashahhud

It is preferable sunnah to point with the forefinger and move it during the tashahhud.

Firstly:

It is sunnah to point with the forefinger and move it during the tashahhud because of the reports:

  •  It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-Zubayr said: When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sat during the prayer, he would place his left foot between his thigh and calf, and tuck his right foot underneath him, and place his left hand on his left knee, and place his right hand on his right thigh, and point with his finger. [Narrated by Muslim, 579].

In al-Nasaa’i (1270) and Abu Dawood (989) it says: “He used to point with his finger when making du’aa’ but he did not move it.”

This addition – “but he did not move it” – was classed as da’eef by Ibn al-Qayyim in Zaad al-Ma’aad, 1/238. It was also classed as da’eef by al-Albaani in Tamaam al-Minnah, p. 218.

  •  It was narrated that Waa’il ibn Hajar said: I said: I will certainly watch how the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prays. So I watched him and he stood up and said takbeer (“Allaahu akbar”), and raised his hands until they were level with his ears. Then he placed his right hand on his left hand, wrist and lower forearm. When he wanted to bow, he raised his hands likewise, and put his hands on his knees, and when he raised his head he raised his hands likewise. Then he prostrated and put his hands level with his ears, then he sat with his left foot tucked underneath him and put his left hand on his left thigh and knee, and he put the edge of his right elbow on his right thigh. Then he held two of his fingers and made a circle, then he raised his forefinger and moved it, making du’aa’ with it.

[Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 889; classed as saheeh by Ibn Khuzaymah, 1/354; Ibn Maajah, 5/170; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 367].

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen quoted this hadeeth – “moving it, making du’aa’ with it” – as evidence that moving the forefinger during the tashahhud should be done with every phrase of the du’aa’. He said in al-Sharh al-Mumti’:

The Sunnah indicates that he should point with it when making du’aa’, because the wording of the hadeeth is “moving it, making du’aa’ with it”. So every time you make du’aa’, move your finger thus indicating the exalted nature of the One to Whom you are addressing your du’aa’s. So we say:

“As-salaamu ‘alayka ayyuha’l-Nabiyyu (peace be upon you, O Prophet)” – you should point your finger because this salaam is a kind of du’aa’. “Al-salaamu ‘alayna (peace be upon us)” – you should point your finger. “Allaahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad (O Allaah, send blessings upon Muhammad)” – you should point your finger. “Allaahumma baarik ‘ala Muhammad) O Allaah, send blessings upon Muhammad)” – you should point your finger. ‘A’oodhu Billaahi min ‘adhaab jahannam (I seek refuge with Allaah from the torment of Hell)” – you should point your finger. “Wa min ‘adhaab al-qabr (and from the torment of the grave)” – you should point your finger. “Wa min fitnat il-mahya wa’l-mamaat (and from the trials of life and death)” – you should point your finger. “Wa min fitnat il-maseeh il-dajjaal (and from the tribulation of the Dajjaal) – you should point your finger. Every time you make du’aa’ you should point your finger, indicating the greatness of the One to Whom you are making du’aa’. This is closer to the Sunnah.

  • Al-Nasaa’i (1273) narrated that Sa’d said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by me whilst I was making du’aa’ with my fingers and he said, “One, one,” and pointed with his index finger. Meaning: point with one finger, namely the index finger.
  • Ahmad (5964) narrated that Naafi’ said: When ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar sat during the prayer, he would put his hands on his thighs and point with his finger whilst looking at it. Then he said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “It is harder on the Shaytaan than iron,” meaning the index finger. This hadeeth was classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Sifat Salaat al-Nabi (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), p. 159.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is mustahabb to point with one finger during “the tashahhud and supplication (du‘aa’)”. [Al-Ikhtiyaaraat, 38.]

The ahaadeeth above indicate two things:

  1.  That one should point with the finger throughout the entire Tashahhud
  2.  That one should move it when making du’aa’.

 

Secondly: 

It is Sunnah when pointing to look at your finger. 

Al-Nawawi said: The Sunnah is not to let your gaze go beyond the pointing finger. There is a saheeh hadeeth concerning this in Sunan Abi Dawood. You should point in the direction of the qiblah and intend when pointing to affirm the Oneness of Allaah and exclusive devotion to Him.  [Sharh Muslim, 5/81].

The hadeeth to which al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) referred is the hadeeth of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-Zubayr quoted above. The version narrated by Abu Dawood is (989): “And he should not let his gaze go beyond his pointing finger.” [Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood].

Thirdly: 

It is Sunnah to point with it towards the qiblah. 

It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar that he saw a man moving pebbles with his hand whilst he was praying. When he finished, ‘Abd-Allaah said to him: “Do not move pebbles whilst you are praying, for that comes from the Shaytaan. Rather do what the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to do. He put his right hand on his thigh and pointed with the finger that is next to the thumb towards the qiblah, and he fixed his gaze on it.” Then he said: “This is what I saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) doing.” Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 1160; Ibn Khuzaymah, 1/355; Ibn Hibbaan, 5/273. classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Nasaa’i.

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah (7/56):

Pointing with the finger throughout the tashahhud and moving it when offering supplication (du‘aa’), and clenching the other fingers should continue until the salaam. End quote.

Whatever the case, the matter is subject to ijtihaad and is something concerning which the scholars differed. The different opinions concerning it may have to do with slight differences in the way the prayer is performed, so there is nothing wrong with differing from this ijtihaad and following what one thinks is more correct on the basis of evidence.

It also says in Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa’imah (5/368):

Raising the forefinger in the tashahhud is Sunnah, and the reason behind it is to indicate the Oneness of Allah. Whoever wishes may move it and whoever wishes may not move it. This matter should not lead to division and discord between seekers of knowledge. If a person does not raise it at all, or he raises it but does not move it, this is a minor matter that should not lead to denunciation and resentment. However the Sunnah is to raise it throughout the shahaadatayn, until the worshippers says the salaam, as an affirmation of divine Oneness. With regard to moving it, that should be when reciting the supplication, as is narrated in the saheeh Sunnah.

Isn’t Ramadan a nafs-killer?

When you want to eat you cannot eat, and there is blessing in eating at a time when you’d rather not eat! (sahoor)
When you want to sleep you push yourself to stay awake and when you’d rather be awake you know you have to get some sleep so you can remain sane…
It almost feels like you have no control over your life any more… you cant do what you please, its all about what Allah wants. This is exactly what we have signed up for:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ اشْتَرَىٰ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُم بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ الْجَنَّةَ
Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. [9:111]

And this is what is expected of us:

التَّائِبُونَ الْعَابِدُونَ الْحَامِدُونَ السَّائِحُونَ الرَّاكِعُونَ السَّاجِدُونَ الْآمِرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّاهُونَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَالْحَافِظُونَ لِحُدُودِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
[Such believers are] the repentant, the worshippers, the praisers [of Allah ], the travelers [for His cause] / those who fast, those who bow and prostrate [in prayer], those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and those who observe the limits [set by] Allah. And give good tidings to the believers. [9:112]

O Allah, accept from us our lives, and give us Jannah. Ameen.
